Enkopiro Camp

Discover a different and unique way of getting to know Kenya, beyond the traditional safari, while you immerse yourself in the wonderful Masai culture. This is the vision come true of Martha, Morris and Enkopiro Camp: an initiative of sustainable tourism whose purpose is to offer unique experiences with a firm commitment to conservation, community participation and the preservation of culture.

When we plan a trip to Kenya, it is common for programs to offer visits to three or four destinations, with stays of 1 or 2 nights in each one. However, this type of itinerary involves spending time traveling, which can not only be exhausting, but also has a negative impact on the environment.

One of the distinctive characteristics of the sustainable travel is the promotion of “Slow Travel”. This philosophy involves spending the majority of your time in one location, offering the opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed pace and fully immerse yourself in the destination. This approach allows you to reserve more time for activities such as safaris and live enriching experiences, while contributing to the support of the local community.

Si tu next destination is Kenya, and since the Maasai Mara National Park It is mandatory, Enkopiro Camp offers us this type of sustainable travel.

In the vicinity of the entrance to the park, we found a gem in a unaltered place blended with nature: a camp that is both eco and boutique, only 4 tents, offers us a luxury experience by concept and location. It is located in a private area, in an elephant corridor and other species, which makes it a exclusive accommodation for a unique safari.

Although Morris's mind is always full of ideas, he has evolved from mechanics to other horizons, transforming humble pieces of local wood into exquisite and unique furniture. Anything that can be done by hand is a challenge for Morris.

Each of the furniture in the camp has been handmade here in Enkopiro (Thanks Morris!), using local materials and featuring unique designs to take care of every corner.

By making our furniture by hand, we give it a personal touch and we create pieces that have their own character and charm.

We both feel at home on this earth, and with the Enkopiro project, the most important of our lives emerged: our son, Ian, who was born in March 2020 in the midst of camp construction, just days before the Covid pandemic, defying all odds.

Marta

Less than three months old, Ian set foot in Enkopiro for the first time. Without a doubt, he is the most incredible little warrior, known here by the name “Reteti”, the name with which the Maasai elders baptized him; he is the energy of it, the joy of it and the true heart of Enkopiro.

It provides employment to the Maasai community while the traveler experiences the destination in a more genuine way.
Only solar energy is used, both for the electrical system and for hot water.
Bottled water is not purchased, but filters and refillable bottles are used. The use of water is carried out efficiently.
All the furniture at the camp has been handmade by Morris, and now the furniture at the school will be as well.
Local crafts are promoted and in the Camp there is a small manyatta (a traditional clay construction made by the mothers of the community), where Maasai items that the women of the tribe bring for sale are displayed.
All the staff's fresh food is bought in the nearest town on local market day (vegetables, meat, legumes...). For the traveler, the purchase of fresh products will be made through a local intermediary who distributes to other accommodations in Mara and transport is shared. They buy products from local farmers and ranchers, applying various sustainability policies in their operations.
In addition, Enkopiro has a small garden for self-consumption or specific products such as lettuce, cherry tomatoes, leeks, parsley, mint...
Waste such as glass, paper or plastic is separated for subsequent recycling.
Bathroom towels are not changed daily and clothes are washed by hand.
Enkopiro is a member of Plastic Busters, an organization to reduce plastic on our planet.
During the safari, food is not individually packaged with cardboard boxes or other practices, but is prepared to be transported in stainless steel containers and served during breakfast or lunch, thus avoiding the generation of waste.
Enkopiro is involved in conservation projects for the flora and fauna that surround them.
Local community-based activities are encouraged for greater cultural exchange and community support.
It promotes long stays (slow travel) with experiences and content for each day.
One of the most important projects is currently being the construction of a primary school to prevent some 200 children from having to walk 7 kilometers to the nearest school which will be inaugurated in January 2024.
